Space Rock Toss
GETTING STARTED:
Introduce the activity by explaining that students will toss "space rocks" (bean bags or soft balls) into different "planets" (buckets, cones, or targets).
Set up multiple stations with varying distances and difficulty levels, allowing students to test their aim and accuracy.
Encourage friendly competition or teamwork, depending on the group dynamics.
Discuss the importance of precision and how astronauts navigate challenges in space.
HOW TO PLAY:
Create 4–5 stations with buckets, cones, or hula hoops to represent planets. Assign each planet a point value based on its distance or size. For example:
Mercury (closest): 1 point.
Mars (medium distance): 3 points.
Saturn (farther away): 5 points.
Each student takes turns tossing 3–5 space rocks into the planets, attempting to earn as many points as possible.
ALTERNATE GAME OPTIONS
Playground Planets: If you have a play structure that students can stand on, you can create fun variations in height or require them to slide down a slide as they throw or other fun twists. Use what you have! (Throw over a table, etc.)
Asteroid Frenzy: Set a timer and have students race to toss as many space rocks as possible into the planets within 60 seconds. Add “black hole” targets (extra buckets) that deduct points if hit.
Orbit Toss Relay: Divide players into teams. Each team member must successfully land a space rock on a planet before the next teammate can toss. The first team to finish the relay wins.
Space Rock Trick Shots: Challenge students to toss the space rocks using creative methods, like behind their back, underhand, or while standing on one foot. Award extra points for successful trick shots.
